USE OF HIGH SELECTIVITY MS TECHNIQUES TO INCREASE THE RETROSPECTABILITY OF THE USE OF SELECTED DOPING AGENTS

In the detection of the abuse of doping agents, the use of high resolution MS or tandem MS/MS has been advocated to improve the detection limits of synthetic androgenic agents like stanozolol, norandrostone and clenbuterol. If the performances of these analytical systems are indeed impressive with a gain of 5 to 10 times in sensitivity, the interpretation of the results is much complicated due to new questions arising about the extracts origin (drug intake versus bacterial or food contaminations) of these trace amounts of xenobiotics in urine. It is the opinion of same international sport federations that the advantages of such better retrospectability are possibly overpassed particularly in view of the latest requirements of the Court of Arbitration in Sport, the ultimate recourse body in this field.

The application of endogenous steroids to sportmen can be demonstrated only after long and tedious so-called longitudinal studies. With the use of isotope ratio MS, three independent groups of researchers have recently proposed a very elegant solution which can be applied.to any sample provided it is large enough in volume. Examples for testosterone and other related steroids indicate the high potential value of this new analytical approach. However, it needs still to be validated on a much larger scale before its efficacy and robustness can be taken for granted.
