The thre major cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol (δ9-THC) and cannabinol (CBN) were identified and determined quantitatively using GC/MS, in samples of illicit herbal cannabis, seized by Customs and police Authorities in Greece during 1996. These samples of cannabis were sent by the above authorities to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, University of Athens, for forensic chemical analysis.
The cannabinoid content of these samples led to the classification of cannabis into two chemical phenotypes and to the differentiation of resinous cannabis and textile cannabis.
The cannabinoid content is of forensic value in the geographical distribution and allocation of cannabis all over the world, since its serves as cannabis fingerprinting.
