TIAFT Regional Meetings

  • 5th South American Regional Meeting TIAFT
V Encontro Regional de Toxicologia Forense de America Latina

PUCRS - Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul
    Porto Alegre, Brazil
    June 17 to 20, 2009 TIAFT's fifth regional meeting

The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists - TIAFT - joins toxicologists from the whole world engaged on the forensic field. Every year, an international congress is organized to discuss themes related to post mortem toxicology, drugs and driving, doping control, systematic toxicological analysis, quality assurance and quality control on toxicological analysis, among many others.
According to TIAFT's mission to strength forensic toxicology in all regions of the world, the association has encouraged the organization of meetings in different continents in order to allow the discussion of the profession's main themes, taking into account the characteristics and needs of the particular regions.
Latin America had a first regional meeting in 2005 in La Plata, Argentina, followed by meetings in Santiago (Chile), Bogotá (Colombia) and, recently, by the 2008 meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Fifth Latin American Regional Meeting to be held in Brazil in 2009 will be an unique moment for the discussion about the developments and difficulties faced by forensic toxicology in our continent. The specificity of the themes, focusing in the application of the toxicological knowledge to the needs of the Law, is especially useful and fascinating for all those working on this exciting field.

    Medici Riccardi Palace

14th National Meeting of GIFTThe meeting, patronized by the University of Florence and the Italian Society of Legal Medicine (SIMLA), was organised by the local forensic toxicologists Francesco Mari and Elisabetta Bertol (GIFT President) and was entitled "New Frontiers of Forensic Toxicology". The meeting had more than a taste of international flavour owing to the presence of renowned scientists who were invited to give lectures on "Advances in Monitoring in Utero Drug Exposure" (Marilyn Huestis, Baltimore, MD, USA), "Evidence and bio-medical-legal Sciences" (Santo Davide Ferrara, Padova, Italy), "Are there new frontiers in postmortem determination and interpretation of blood alcohol concentrations?"(Nuno Duarte Vieira, Lisbon, Portugal) and "Molecular biology and the nearly normal autopsy: what toxicologists and pathologists need to know about genomics and sudden death"(Stephen B. Karch, Berkeley, CA, USA).
The meeting, held in the splendid Charles VIII Hall of the Medici Riccardi Palace, was focused on the future perspectives of forensic toxicology in view of the recent advances of pharmaco/toxicogenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, neurosciences and substance abuse, new markers and biosensors of foetal exposure and post-mortem toxicological evaluation.
Social events were topped by the superb Gala Dinner at Borghese Palace, in the very heart of Florence, were meeting attendants were delighted with a concert entitled "Myriacantha, Songs and Roses" with Anna Granata (voice) and Susanna Bertuccioli (harp) of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
