TIAFT Regional Meetings
- 4th South American Regional Meeting TIAFT
3rd Latinamerican Conference on Chemistry Related Accidents
Buenos Aires, Argentina
November 3rd to 7th, 2008
Dear colleagues,
The International Asociation of Forensic Toxicologists, TIAFT, has requested us, during the meeting that took place in Santiago de Chile in 2006, to prepare the 4º South American Regional Meeting TIAFT in Buenos Aires this year, since we will also be celebrating the hundredth aniversary of the creation of our Judicial Morgue.
As Tiaft Regional Representative, it is mine the honor and the arduous task to preside this event and this is why, with the support of Dr. Luis Alberto Ferrari (also TIAFT Regional Representative), the Asociación Argentina de Farmacia y Bioquímica Legal (TIAFT member), the Asociación Médica Argentina (where the meeting will take place at its headquarters located in Av. Santa Fe 1171) and CIQUIME, Centro de Información Química para Emergencias, we have scheduled together with the mentioned event the "III CONFERENCIA LATINOAMERICANA SOBRE ACCIDENTES QUIMICOS" (3rd Latinamerican Conference on Chemical Related Accidents) for November 3rd to 7th, 2008.
We are very pleased to invite all TIAFT members' worldwide colleagues, to participate in this meeting and enjoy Buenos Aires, tango music and dancing and its barbeques.
Best regards,
Dr. Oscar Alberto Locani
TIAFT Regional Representative

High points of the region
Mediterranean coastline. The sun obviously contributes to a very agreeable lifestyle along with the famous 'Mistral' wind which clears the skies and bestows a special luminosity upon the region which has attracted painters such as Cézanne, Braque, Dufy and Derain. Here, leisure activities can be practised all year round, with 40% of the region being public land surrounded by the sea - a top attraction for diving, fishing, sailing and climbing. Marseille's activities remain firmly rooted in its traditions and culture, all of which are represented throughout the cities museums, its 25 theatres, its Opera and its International School of Dance and the National Ballet. To really discover its baroque beauty and absorb everything Marseille has to offer one must leave the city centre because every district (and there are more than one hundred) has a distinct flavour of a Provençal village. Having climbed up to visit Notre Dame de la Garde, guardian of the sailors and sitting 162m above the sea, one can follow in the footsteps of Cézanne and pay a visit to l'Estaque or go to la Treille in foothills of Pagnol territory. Marseille can also be discovered from the sea with the Isles of Frioul and Chateau d'If giving a different and very beautiful view of the Phocaean City.

- 14th National Meeting of GIFT (Group of Italian Forensic Toxicologists)
Florence, Italy
November 23rd - 25th
Palazzo Vecchio (the City Hall)
The 14th National Meeting of GIFT (Group of Italian Forensic Toxicologists) was held in Florence between November 23rd and 25th, 2007. The meeting, superbly organised by the local forensic toxicologists Francesco Mari and Elisabetta Bertol, was dedicated to the theme of quality in analytical forensic toxicology. The opening ceremony, held in the 14th century Palazzo Vecchio (the City Hall) was enhanced by invited lectures of Hans Maurer (Quality principles, concepts, guidelines in forensic toxicology), Steven Karch (To test and what not to test, that is the question). Picking the best specimen), and Marcello Chiarotti (Peer-review accreditation, investigation and promotion of excellence). During the meeting, different forensic toxicology key issues were discussed, including markers of chronic alcohol abuse, general unknown search and other applications of high resolution mass spectrometry, saliva and hair testing, method validation, carbon monoxide determination in the victims of terrorist attacks. The renewal of the executive committee was the main item in the agenda of the business meeting: Elisabetta Bertol was elected as the new GIFT president, while Aldo Polettini was nominated deputy president. During the final banquet, held on the Brunelleschi Terrace of Grand Hotel Baglioni, meeting attendants were charmed with delicious Tuscan food and Chianti while watching a breathtaking view over Florence. The meeting was unanimously recognized as a huge success both in terms of scientific contents and attendance, with 95 participants from the whole country. It was also an occasion to reinforce Italian participation in TIAFT, with 24 new applications for membership.
