Olaf H. Drummer PhD, BAppSc

TIAFT member since 1989. He is a toxicologist and forensic pharmacologist, and is head of forensic and scientific services at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. These laboratories include forensic toxicology laboratory for the State of Victoria. He graduated in Applied Chemistry (RMIT) in 1973 and completed his PhD (Medicine)(1980) on the structure activity relationships of adrenergic drugs. He is chair of the clinical toxicology committee of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitroing and Clinical Toxicolgy (IATDMCT). He is a member of the Australasian Society for Clinical and Experimental Pharmnacology and Toxicology (ASCEPT), the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), and other professional organizations. He is an associate member of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). He is a past research fellow with the National Health & Medical Research council (Australia) and continues to have active research interests. His research interests include the effects of drugs in driving, postmortem toxicology artefacts, and forensic pharmacology of drugs of abuse. He has published over 200 scientific articles in forensic toxicology and biochemical pharmacology. He is adjunct professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University.

Alain G. Verstraete, MD

TIAFT member since 1988, he studied Medicine at Ghent University, Belgium and specialized in Clinical Biology and in vitro Nuclear Medicine at Ghent University Hospital. He obtained a doctorate in the biomedical sciences in October 1994. Since 1987, he is responsible for the Emergency Laboratory and the Toxicology Laboratory of Ghent University Hospital. He is part-time professor at Ghent University. His main research interest is in drugs and driving. He was advisor to the former Belgian Federal Secretary of State for Security Jan Peeters for the drafting of the legislation on drugs and driving and is coordinator of the EU project ROSITA on roadside drug testing. He is chairman on the working group on Alcohol, Drugs, Medicines and driving of directorate-general Transport and energy of the European Commission.
He is president of the Belgian Society of Clinical Biology, vice-president of the Toxicological Society of Belgium and Luxembourg, board member of the European Workplace Drug Testing society (EWDTS) and webmaster of the International Association for Therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical toxicology (IATDMCT).
He received an 2002 AACC outstanding speaker award, the 2002 ICADTS (International council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety) Haddon award given to scientists who take research findings and make changes in public policy and the 2002 TIAFT achievement award. He is member of the editorial board of Journal of Analytical Toxicology, Traffic injury prevention and Acta Clinica Belgica and deputy editor-in-chief of Annales de Toxicologie Analytique.

Pascal Kintz, PhD

Dr. Kintz has a degree in Pharmacy, a Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies in Molecular Pharmacology and a PhD in Toxicology (1989) of the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg. He is Associate Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Strasbourg and Associate Professor of Legal Medicine. He teaches forensic toxicology at the Faculty of Medicine and is Director of thesis at the University L. Pasteur of Strasbourg (pharmacy, medicine). His main topics of interest include: alternative specimens with a special focus on hair, pharmacology of drugs of abuse and doping control.
He is a member of Société de Médecine Légale et de Criminologie de France, the Société Française de Toxicologie Analytique (President 1997-2003), Société Française de Toxicologie, Gesellschaft für Toxicologische und Forensische Chemie (Germany), Society of Forensic Toxicologists (USA), Toxicological society of Belgium and Luxembourg, American Association of Clinical Chemistry, International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology and Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (USA). In TIAFT, he was chairman of the Young Scientists Committee from 1996 to 2002.
He is an Expert for Justice for the Court of appeal of Colmar since 27 November 1992 for Chemistry, Toxicology, and Blood alcohol determination and an Expert certified by the Gesellschaft für Toxicologische und Forensische Chemie (Germany) and Eurotox. He is a reviewer of the following journals: Journal of Analytical Toxicology (associate editor), Journal of Chromatography, Forensic Science International, Journal of Forensic Science Society, International Journal of Legal Medicine, Steroids, Clinical Chemistry, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toxicorama, now Annales de Toxicologie Analytique.

TIAFT Secretary

Chung, Hee-Sun, Ph.D

A member of TIAFT since 1990, she is a Director of Forensic Science Department at the National Institute of Scientific Investigation where she has been working since 1978. Her department includes five divisions of Drug-Toxicology, Narcotics Analysis, Chemical Analysis, Physical analysis and Traffic Engineering. She completed her PhD (Pharmacy, 1987) on the effect of methamphetamine on the regional levels of neurotransmitters in the rat brain and did her post-doctoral research at the King's college in London. She is a member of Korean Pharmaceutical Society and Korean Society of Forensic Science as well as the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and IATDMCT. She is a member of advisory committee on drugs for Korean National Police Agency and Korean Food and Drug Administration. Her research interests include the impurity profiling of illicit methamphetamine, drug testing in hair and abuse liability of non-controlled drugs.

Daniel S. Isenschmid, PhD, DABFT

Daniel S. Isenschmid is currently the Chief Toxicologist at the Office of the Wayne County Medical Examiner. In addition, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology at Wayne State University and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Wayne State University, College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions.
Dr. Isenschmid received his B.S. degree in Biology from Adelphi University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pathology and forensic toxicology, respectively, from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Medicine. Dr. Isenschmid was the recipient of several Educational Research Awards from the Society of Forensic Toxicologists and the Irving Sunshine Award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences for his doctoral research on cocaine.
He has published and/or presented many papers on topics related to postmortem forensic drug testing including medical examiner case reports, the interpretation of postmortem cocaine concentrations, the stability and analysis of cocaine and its metabolites, and the effects of cocaine on human performance. Dr. Isenschmid has given many lectures in various topics related to forensic toxicology to graduate and undergraduate students, pathologists, law enforcement personnel and attorneys. He regularly gives lectures on the forensic toxicology of cocaine including the Borkenstein course on the effects of drugs on human performance and behavior at Indiana University, Bloomington.
Dr. Isenschmid is Diplomate and Secretary of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology. In addition to being Treasurer of TIAFT, he is a member and Past President of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists and a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences where he also served on its Board of Directors. Dr. Isenschmid is an Inspector for the National Laboratory Certification Program and has served on the Drug Testing Advisory Board for the Department of Health and Human Services

Marc LeBeau

Marc A. LeBeau is the Chief of the FBI Laboratory's Chemistry Unit. He has worked as a Forensic Chemist and Toxicologist for the FBI since 1994 and has testified as an expert in federal, state, and county courts throughout the United States. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and Criminal Justice from Central Missouri State University (1988) and a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven (1990). He was employed in the St. Louis County Medical Examiners Office (1990-1994), before beginning his career with the FBI. In 2005, he received his doctorate in toxicology from the University of Maryland - Baltimore.
Dr. LeBeau has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals, as well as book chapters and abstracts. In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice, he also published a "tip sheet" for investigators of the crime of drug-facilitated rape. Dr. LeBeau has provided training to more than 8,000 law enforcement officers, forensic scientists, attorneys, medical professionals, and rape crisis counselors throughout the world. Additionally, he was a contributor to training materials for prosecutors of drug facilitated rape cases and co-edited a book entitled Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault: A Forensic Handbook. In 2004, Dr. LeBeau won the FBI Director's Award for Outstanding Scientific Advancement and in 2008 the End Violence Against Women (EVAW) International Visionary Award.
Dr. LeBeau is also active in numerous scientific organizations. He joined TIAFT in 1995. In addition to his role as a current TIAFT Board, he has served on the TIAFT Committees of the Young Scientists and Systematic Toxicological Analysis. Additionally, Dr. LeBeau has been a member of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT) since 1995 and has served as Chairperson of the Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Committee since its inception. He is currently on the SOFT Board of Directors, as well. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). In 2004, Dr. LeBeau was the co-host for the FBI Laboratory Symposium on Forensic Toxicology and Joint Meeting of SOFT and TIAFT in Washington, DC.

Univ.-Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans H. Maurer

Hans H. Maurer is full Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology at the Faculty of Medicine and at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Saarland, since 1992. He is head of the Department of Experimental and Clinical Toxicology. His main two areas of research are analytical toxicology (GC-MS, LC-MS of drugs, poisons and their metabolites) and in-vitro and in-vivo metabolism (phase I and phase II, isoenzyme identification, pharmacogenetics). He has published extensively in both areas (besides original papers, reviews and proceedings, handbooks and computer databanks on GC-MS).
He is editorial board member of the Journal of Chromatography B, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, Current Pharmaceutical Analysis, Current Drug Metabolism, Drug Metabolism Letters, Annales Pharmaceutiques Françaises, SUCHT - German Journal of Addiction Research and Practice, and reviewer of most of the international journals of his field as well as of scientific research foundations in Germany, UK, Switzerland, and New Zealand. He was guest editor of special issues of Journal of Chromatography B (1998), Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (2002 and 2004) and Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (2007).
In his career, Dr. Maurer received several scientific awards, among which the Young Investigator Award of the Medical Faculty presented in Homburg 1983, the Irving Sunshine Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Toxicology of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology (IATDM-CT) presented in Vancouver 1997, "Membre d'Honneur" de la Société Française de Toxicologie Analytique (SFTA) presented in Dinard 2003, and finally the Alan Curry Lifetime Achievement Award of TIAFT for Outstanding Contributions to Forensic Toxicology presented in Melbourne 2003. In 2007, he received the Doctor honoris causa degree of the University of Ghent in Belgium for his outstanding scientific achievements.
Besides his membership in several national and international scientific societies, Dr. Maurer is President of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology (IATDM-CT, 2007-2009) and is TIAFT executive board member (2005-2011), treasurer of the Society of Toxicological and Forensic Chemistry (GTFCh, since 1987), chairman of the GTFCh Committee "Clinical Toxicology", since 1997, and finally chapter president of Saarland of the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG, 2004-2006).

TIAFT Board member and Bulletin Editor

Anya Pierce B.Sc, Dip. Med Tox, MBA

Anya Pierce has worked in toxicology for more than 26 years. She is currently Head of Toxicology at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. Her unit supplies the national clinical toxicology service in Ireland as well as workplace drug testing and a service to addiction centres and coroners.
She was a founder member of the Irish Society of Toxicology in 1985 and was the Irish representative to the European Commission expert group on guidelines for the detection of drugs of abuse, especially in the workplace, and co-author of the resultant recommendations. She is a member of the committee on emerging trends/new synthetic drugs of the National Advisory Committee on Drugs (NACD).
She is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT) as well as editor of the TIAFT Bulletin, the quarterly journal of the Association. She is secretary and founder member of the European Workplace Drug testing Society (EWDTS), and is secretary of the clinical toxicology committee of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology (IATDMCT).
